At Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, “take the airport metro” is not a complete plan for someone arriving at Terminal 3. Start with the terminal printed in your current flight information, then choose a route that reaches your actual hotel—not just a station with “airport” in its name.
This guide focuses on the ground transfer from T3. Official notices were checked on October 23, 2026. For the earlier stages of landing, baggage and getting connected, use our China airport arrival guide. The route-selection checklist below is editorial advice, not a timetable or a guaranteed connection.

Why older T3 instructions can mislead
Guangzhou’s May 8 terminal-transfer notice reported the relocation of remaining T1 flights to T3 and described a Gaozeng shuttle connection to Metro Lines 3 and 9. An airline list saved before that move is not a reliable way to choose your terminal today. Check your flight with the airline again before travelling.
The same May notice quoted a shuttle fare. A newer October 1 notice from the Guangzhou Aerotropolis authority refers to free shuttle measures introduced on June 6 and announces a new Gaozeng bus facility. Use the later notice and current signs rather than treating an old fare or boarding-point screenshot as permanent.
Option 1: T3 shuttle to Gaozeng, then metro
The relevant connection is the Konggang 2 branch shuttle (空港2路支线) between T3 and Gaozeng. Gaozeng connects with Metro Lines 3 and 9. At T3, ask for the current Gaozeng shuttle boarding point; at Gaozeng, follow the current bus-to-metro signs.
The October notice describes a covered connection between the metro exit and the new bus facility. This is still a transfer between a bus and the metro, not a direct metro departure from the T3 arrivals hall. Include walking, waiting and changing modes when comparing routes. Our China metro guide for foreign visitors covers the practical steps of using a metro system.
This option is worth checking when the onward metro route serves your hotel’s area well and you can manage your luggage through the changes. Write down the destination station, interchange and final walk before leaving the terminal. A convenient first leg does not necessarily produce the easiest full journey.
Option 2: intercity rail from Baiyun Airport East
The municipal January 19 T3 transport guide identifies Baiyun Airport East Station as connected to T3 and describes intercity services, including connections from the T2 transport centre. Intercity rail and the metro are different services: do not assume that a metro station name, ticket or route diagram answers the intercity part of your trip.
Before choosing this route, check the current station display or staffed counter for your destination, next departure, ticket requirements and final connection. The January article is useful for understanding the layout of the options, but its journey times, fares and terminal-transfer instructions should not replace a current service check.
Compare the complete chain: T3 arrivals to the intercity platform, the train journey, any change of service, and the last leg to the hotel. If that chain is unclear, ask staff to identify the destination on your saved address rather than buying a ticket simply because a station sounds familiar.
Option 3: a road transfer with an exact pickup point
A taxi, correctly arranged ride-hailing pickup or prearranged vehicle may be more practical when the rail route involves several changes or you have bulky luggage. That is a planning choice, not a claim that a car is always faster or cheaper.
For a prearranged pickup, get the terminal, meeting level, exit or pickup-zone identifier, vehicle details and contact method in writing. For an app booking, match the pickup location shown in the app with the signs where you are standing. Do not use a departures drop-off point as an assumed arrivals meeting point. Read our taxi and ride-hailing guide before relying on an unfamiliar booking process.
Do not turn a holiday extension into a nightly promise
The October notice extended shuttle operations on October 1 and October 5–7 to match holiday metro arrangements. Those named dates are not evidence of the same late service on October 23 or on your arrival date. Check both the bus and the onward train: catching a shuttle does not guarantee the next service is still running.
If your flight is late, reassess after baggage collection using the actual time. Keep a road-transfer alternative and your hotel’s full Chinese address available offline. Do not plan a tight onward appointment from the flight’s scheduled touchdown alone.
A five-line transfer plan to save before flying
- Actual terminal: flight number, travel date and the terminal confirmed by the airline.
- Exact destination: hotel branch, Chinese address and a matching map pin.
- Primary route: each service in order, including the final walk or ride.
- Decision point: where to ask about departures if the flight or baggage is delayed.
- Backup: verified pickup instructions and a reachable hotel or coordinator contact.
For a trade visit, keep this transport plan separate from exhibition registration. Our first-time Canton Fair buyer guide covers phases, badges and booth preparation. If you need help coordinating confirmed appointments and ground arrangements, review our China business visit services and ask whether your dates and requested support can be covered; do not assume airport pickup is included.
