If you have one free day in Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou offer two different ways to experience the lower Yangtze region. Choose Suzhou when a classical garden is the main reason for going; choose Hangzhou when you would rather shape the day around West Lake. Then check whether the actual trains, local transfers and attraction bookings leave enough time to enjoy that choice.

Suzhou or Hangzhou: choose the day you want
Neither city should be reduced to a quick photo stop between trains. These choices work best when you give the day one main purpose:

The contrast has a cultural basis: UNESCO describes Suzhou’s classical gardens as carefully designed miniature landscapes, while its West Lake listing covers the lake, surrounding hills and landscape features such as causeways. The table above translates that difference into a planning choice, rather than ranking one city as universally better.

Compare the whole journey, not the fastest train
Use China Railway’s official English 12306 site to check departure station, arrival station and date. Compare a workable outward and return service together. A short published train duration excludes the journey from your Shanghai hotel, station procedures and the transfer to your first attraction.
For each candidate, write one line: hotel → exact Shanghai station → exact arrival station → first attraction → return station → hotel. Fill in the transport legs from current route information. Do not choose a more distant station merely because its train is a few minutes faster.
- Suzhou is not Suzhou North. The city’s transport directory lists Suzhou Railway Station in Gusu district and Suzhou North Railway Station in Xiangcheng district as separate locations. “North Square” at Suzhou Railway Station is not another name for Suzhou North. Match the full station name in your ticket and navigation app.
- Keep Hangzhou station names distinct. The city’s railway introduction distinguishes Hangzhou Railway Station from Hangzhou East Railway Station. That page is dated, so use it for the naming distinction, not current timetables or interchange instructions. Calculate the route from the station on your chosen train to your specific lakeside starting point.
- Check both directions separately. Do not assume your train back uses the station where you arrived, or that every Shanghai service uses Shanghai Hongqiao.

A focused Suzhou day: one garden first
If the Humble Administrator’s Garden is your priority, check its official booking channel before fixing the rest of the day. A June 2026 city notice reporting the garden management’s arrangements describes timed, real-name advance reservations. Confirm the current requirements and the process for your passport type; a general notice about Chinese identity-card entry does not establish how every foreign visitor’s booking will work.
Plan around the entry slot you can actually secure:
- Choose an outward train that leaves room for arrival procedures and the local journey before your garden slot.
- Make the garden the main visit. Leave enough time to pause, rather than treating the entrance as a box to tick.
- Have lunch in the same part of the city. Add a second attraction only after checking its separate entrance, hours and booking requirements.
- Keep the final stop on a practical route back to the station on your return ticket.
The city’s January 2026 metro report identifies the Humble Administrator’s Garden Suzhou Museum station on Line 6. This is an orientation point, not a complete route from every railway station. Look up your actual transfer; the China metro guide covers the practical basics.
If you add Suzhou Museum, verify the branch. The museum’s 2026 holiday notice distinguishes the Main Museum at 204 Dongbei Street from the West Museum at 399 Changjiang Road. A focused Hangzhou day: one part of West Lake
Decide where the lake visit begins and ends before choosing lunch or an extra attraction. “West Lake” is a large area, not one entrance: the city’s published introduction puts the full circuit at approximately 15 kilometres. That is useful scale context, not a suggestion to walk the entire perimeter on a day trip.
For a manageable first visit, select one shoreline section on a current map, identify two or three points you want to see within it, and choose a return connection near the end. Leave room for lunch and rests. Treat a boat ride or a ticketed attraction as optional until you have checked its current operation, queue and last-entry arrangements.
A lake walk and a tea-country excursion are different plans. If tea is your main interest, replace part of the lake visit with a separately planned visit and calculate the extra transport; do not add it simply because both appear on a Hangzhou highlights list. In poor weather, shorten the outdoor plan or choose another date rather than assuming an indoor alternative has walk-in availability.
Four checks before committing to either city
- The main experience is feasible. You have checked the correct venue, visit date and any required entry slot, or selected a specific lakeside route that fits your group.
- The round trip works. You have checked both rail directions, full station names and local transfers—not just found an attractive outward departure.
- There is a stopping point. Set a time to leave the last activity based on the route back, station guidance and a contingency allowance. Do not count on a later train having seats.
- You know what to drop. Decide which optional stop goes first if the day runs late. Avoid making an out-of-city day trip depend on a tight same-evening flight connection.
